New-Age Stardom Emerges: Web Series Stars We Can’t Get Enough Of
It is said that India’s biggest religions are cricket and Bollywood. But times are changing and there might be a third – the Internet. With the wide array of content available to us, the world of stories may never be the same again. Web shows have given birth to a new breed of actors who are taking over our hearts and minds as well as stories which may have otherwise never seen the light of day. In a lot of ways, the web space is freeing for creators and audiences alike. With no box office dictating content, the horizon just gets wider and wider.

Some of the best talents that the country has seen over the past few years have been in the web series space. These actors have wooed us with characters that have struck a chord with us and more importantly, their talent surpasses Bollywood’s limits of what actors should be like. This new breed of stars seem to be people we could meet, have a conversation with and maybe even be friends with. Here are some of our favourite actors that we met, all thanks to the Internet.

1. KUBBRA SAIT

One of the greatest discoveries of last year in the web space was undoubtedly Kubbra Sait. She won a million hearts overnight with her portrayal of Kukoo in Sacred Games, a transgender bar dancer. Kukoo was a sensation and ‘Kukoo ka jadoo chal gaya’ became the catchphrase synonymous to the show. For taking bold choices in that one and following it up with TVF’s Tripling Season 2 and Zee5’s Rejectx, we love Kubbra!

Our favourite performance: Kukoo ka jaadoo chal gaya, for sure.

2. MITHILA PALKAR

This list would be incomplete without the Internet’s favourite girl, Mithila. You watch any of Mithila’s performances and she will remind you of someone you know – maybe someone you met once, a friend or even of yourself. The girl next door quality Mithila naturally brings topped with super acting skills makes her a force to reckon with.

Our favourite performance: Little Things where Mithila seems to be playing herself.

3. AMOL PARASHAR

One of the first few shows that reached tremendous success in India was The Viral Fever’s Tripling. A show that explored the relationship between three siblings on an unusual journey. Amol as one of the siblings stole the show with his stellar acting skills and then went on to do incredible work in other shows as well.

Our favourite performance: Definitely start with Tripling

4. SUMEET VYAS

To put it simply, Sumeet is a powerhouse of talent. Not only is he a stunning performer, he is also a star writer. Sumeet broke the internet for a while after his role in TVF’s Permanent Roommates as the enthusiastic Mikesh. Later, he went on to act in shows like Tripling, Bang Baaja Baarat etc. He even co-wrote Tripling!

Our favourite performance: Permanent Roommates

5. SHWETA TRIPATHI

Yes, you may know Shweta as that girl in Masaan, but her career actually started with television in the show Kya Mast Hai Life. Shweta apart from being a great performer has also chosen parts which are diverse as Ananya in The Trip and Dr. Shreya in Laakhon Mein Ek (Season 2) and show her range as an actor

Our favourite performance: The Trip

What makes these actors so real? Is it the fact that they’re right inside our homes with us? Well, we salute each of them and raise a toast to all the good work – in the past and in the future!
